Inspirational and Passionate Leader

Jocelyn Evans oversees a complex business area at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, the largest nonprofit health insurer in upstate New York. She has oversight of key business processes that reach about 1.2 million of the health plan’s membership.

Her colleagues say she’s an inspirational and passionate leader who serves as an excellent role model and a continuous staff resource. They further say she seeks ways to collaborate, improve enrollment processes and find solutions while keeping the customer in the forefront. Evans is credited with recent improvements that have resulted in improved quality and efficiency at the company.

“When I tap into my passion for helping people by creating growth opportunities and fairness is when I’m in my zone and where I want to be,” Evans said.

Evans lives by the words: Learn, Live, Laugh. She says her greatest achievement has been being a mom while overcoming physical and emotional issues related to a cancer diagnosis and the recovery process.

Today, outside of work, she’s active with youth mentoring programs in Rochester, N.Y. She’s a co-founder and board member of the Pop Warner Monroe County Redskins Football and Cheer program, which enrolled about 170 students this season. The league is part of the national, non-profit Pop Warner organization, with the objective of developing well-rounded young men and women who learn not only the fundamentals of football and cheerleading, but also the importance of education in an atmosphere conducive to developing sound character while having a good time.

Evans says the most important qualities a woman leader should have are compassion, fairness, drive, confidence, and a love for learning and listening. She holds a bachelor degree from the University of Rochester.
