Sharing the Leadership Journey
Emilia Lopez is a managing vice president with Capital One Financial who successfully drives her teams to be innovative and agile, ever improving, and striving to bring the best products and service to consumers.
She leads strategy for Capital One’s credit card products with a focus on the Venture and Quicksilver card portfolios. Her colleagues say she engages regularly with associates, including Capital One’s Hispanic Network and Women’s Network, sharing her leadership journey. She’s known for encouraging employees to celebrate their shared culture, support each other, and encourage continuous learning to meet business objectives.
“I am constantly struck and humbled by how much of an impact I can have through leading by example, and taking on the opportunity to support and mentor other women; so I embrace and tackle with gusto every chance I get,” she said.
Lopez believes the most important quality any leader should have is the ability to develop relationships that bring out the best in others while driving toward the most ideal outcome. “If you aim to be a better version of yourself, what for others signifies failure becomes feedback, and a tool that teaches you and strengthens you until you reach your full potential,” she said.
Prior to her promotion last year to managing vice president, Lopez had led the U.S. card Hispanic and underserved segments. She was also in charge of the agenda to help people use credit wisely, including CreditWise, Capital One’s digital financial wellness tool that is now available to all consumers to help them understand and monitor their credit score. Lopez’s many accomplishments include making CreditWise available in Spanish. She was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia, and lives by the words “stay true to yourself and always seek to be a better version of yourself.”
Lopez holds a B.A. at C.E.S.A., Colombia and an MBA at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
