Good leaders treat people right and invest in them
I believe effective leadership is rooted in trust, collaboration, and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed. Throughout my career, I’ve found that teams perform at their highest level when people feel valued, supported, and connected to a shared purpose. Creating that kind of environment requires more than strong technical skills—it requires listening, communication, and a willingness to invest in the growth of others.
One of the leadership skills I rely on most is building consensus. Early in my career, I expected leadership to be primarily about strategy and decision-making. Over time, I’ve come to appreciate that some of the most important aspects of leadership involve bringing together different perspectives, ensuring everyone feels heard, and creating alignment around common goals. When team members understand how their contributions fit into a larger vision, they are more engaged, collaborative, and motivated to achieve exceptional results. I view my role as helping create that alignment while fostering an atmosphere where people feel comfortable sharing ideas and contributing meaningfully to the team’s success. I also place a strong emphasis on mentorship and professional development.
Having benefited from the guidance and support of outstanding mentors throughout my own career, I believe great leaders create opportunities for others to learn, grow, and take on new challenges. Whether that means helping a colleague develop new skills, encouraging someone to step into a leadership opportunity, or providing support through a complex project, I view mentorship as an essential part of building strong, sustainable teams.
I have found that investing in people not only strengthens individual careers but also contributes to a more collaborative and resilient organization. Another key aspect of my leadership approach is maintaining a long-term perspective. While it is important to meet immediate objectives, I try to think strategically about the future of my team. That means identifying opportunities for growth, strengthening connections across offices and practice areas, fostering collaboration among colleagues with different experiences, and helping develop the next generation of leaders. I strive to look beyond individual success and focus on creating an environment where the entire team can thrive.
Ultimately, I believe the most effective leaders are those who empower others. By building trust, encouraging collaboration, listening thoughtfully, and investing in people’s development, I aim to create teams that are not only successful in achieving their goals but are also engaged, connected, and positioned for long-term success. When people feel supported and united by a common purpose, they are capable of achieving far more together than any one person could accomplish alone.
